Google and Levi’s to launch the Commuter X Jacquard Smart Jacket

Google and Levi’s to launch the Commuter X Jacquard Smart Jacket

There is no denying the fact that Google and innovation go hand in hand. With that said, the world’s largest online search giants have yet again come up with something different this time around as well. The recently concluded Google I/O is an annual platform that showcases what the future (and Google) holds in store for us. Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects division (ATAP) made a bunch of cool announcements including the much awaited Project Ara (arriving in 2017), Project Soli and Project Jacquard, ATAP’s touch – sensitive fabric project. Speaking at the event, Google’s Technical Program lead Dr. Ivan Poupyrev, who is also currently heading the ATAP division announced a new collaboration with Levi’s to launch their famous Commuter jacket with the new technology built inside. Using sensors weaved into the fabric, Levi’s Commuter x Jacquard by Google Trucker Jacket connects to a user’s phone and allows them to interact with it by touching a specific portion of the sleeve. Functions include answering/rejecting calls, as well as integration with services like Spotify, Google Maps and Strava. Google also plans on releasing APIs that will open the gateway for more developers in the future. As far as the jacket’s durability is concerned, Poupyrev says you can handle it like any other jacket; you just need to make sure to remove the Bluetooth chip on the sleeve’s button loop before washing. Levi’s Commuter X jacket with Project Jacquard is expected to launch their beta this fall while the worldwide launch will be sometime in spring 2017. We’ll keep you guys posted on any further developments. So what do you guys think about this new “smart” fashion apparel? Would it be another addition to your...

Google and Maserati announce World’s First Android Car

Google and Maserati announce World’s First Android Car

When Google first announced Android Auto back in 2014 at Google I/O, it started creating a lot of enthusiasm amongst car owners worldwide. Two years down the line, drivers today can easily access the fascinating world of Android running on compatible vehicles that interface with the Android Auto app. As always, Google is once again creating major strides this year at the ongoing Google I/O 2016 developer’s conference in California with a bunch of new and exciting announcements. The company announced the world’s first Android car in collaboration with Maserati, one of the world’s most luxurious car manufacturers. Even though this is just an initial concept, we do get a fair idea of what we could expect from Android Auto in the future. Android Auto currently works in sync with the supported apps at the same time mirroring them onto the car’s mounted display. The Maserati on the other hand is running Android natively without the need of syncing it with secondary devices like a smartphone or tablet. The dashboard comprises of a huge 4K display which not only acts as your infotainment hub, but it also allows you to operate core vehicle functionality thanks to new APIs and features recently announced with Google’s upcoming (yet to be named) OS, Android N. That means the same screen from which you’ve grown accustomed to playing music, making calls, and controlling navigation will now let you set your car’s air conditioning and seat warmers. This particular car actually has seat vibrators, controllable directly from the dash screen. The bottom of the screen shows 5 primary buttons: Navigation Phone Home Screen Audio/Multimedia System Apps The home screen shows a stream of relevant content on large, easily scrollable cards such as recent calls, possible destinations, and other bits of information you’re likely to want to see. And ofcourse you’ll have access to Android Auto optimized apps such as Pocketcasts, Spotify, Google Play Music, and Pandora. The experience looks brilliant on the huge 13-inch display, especially the big and bold maps while navigating. It’s all powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 828 chipset, including the 720p display found behind the steering wheel. As mentioned earlier, the new Android Auto car integration is still in its early stages and there aren’t any consumer-ready vehicles that have been announced as yet. We do expect to hear more from Google in the months to come and hope for more compatible models sometime in 2017. What are your thoughts on Android Auto’s new features? We would love to hear your views in the comments below. Cheers!!                                   Source:...

Twitter’s 140 character limit still standing!

Twitter’s 140 character limit still standing!

Twitter has been making strides recently with a bunch of new tweaks and features that have enhanced the way people have been traditionally using the social media platform. In a recent announcement, the company is said to stop counting photos and links as part of its 140 character limit for a single tweet. This will allow users to add 23 additional characters to their tweets as links currently hog 23 characters even after Twitter automatically shortens them. There were rumors flying around in the beginning of the year that Twitter would be increasing its character limit from 140 characters to a whopping 10,000 characters but then the company decided not to go with it (or at least put it on a hold) for now as the core beauty of twitter lies in its short text based messages. Twitter’s 140-character limit was originally adopted because it was a way to send Tweets while fitting all the information within a mobile text message, a common way for sending Tweets when the service debuted in 2006, before the rise of the smartphones genre. The new feature is expected to arrive in two weeks so make sure you guys keep your app updated to the latest version. Happy...

On the contrary, other competitors could not consider this as a better option with their products. YouTube introduces new in-app chat feature

YouTube introduces new in-app chat feature

YouTube has been recently adding new features to its mobile versions with one significant addition being the auto-play video feature similar to what we see in the web version of the world’s most popular video sharing site. Many people, including myself felt a bit annoyed with the auto play feature but thankfully you do get an option to disable it from the app’s settings. Starting today, YouTube will be testing out a new messenger like feature which lets users communicate with each other privately and also directly share videos without the need of sharing just the videos URL. The company feels that by integrating the messaging option into its native application will allow users to easily share videos with friends and family while at the same time drop in a message or two as well. For now, the new messaging feature is currently available for testing among few selected users and will be available to all in the next...

Infinix Hot 3 – Hands on Review

Infinix Hot 3 – Hands on Review

Infinix has done an exceptional job in bringing great devices for more than reasonable prices. Most of which do not require you to burn a hole in your pocket to get. The latest in their range of extremely budget friendly devices is the Infinix Hot 3, which costs less than $100 (PKR 9,999) which is great considering the specs. We got our hands on a test unit and took it out for a swirl. Starting things off, the Infinix Hot 3 comes with a 5.5 inch 720p HD display (267 ppi), which is quite sharp, and the colors pop out really well especially the blacks. Watching videos on YouTube on the big display is a lot of fun as well. The screen is bright enough to be used in strong sunlight, but in order to do so the brightness level has to be put on max. The device feels quite premium, even though it has a full plastic body. The curved back sure does help this cause. Despite the size of the device, one handed use is fairly easy, though a back cover would be recommended for better grip.   Under the hood lies a MediaTek MT6580 1.3GHz Quad-core processor with a Mali400-MP2 GPU which is powerful enough to handle everyday apps. Multi-tasking (max 5 apps) is not too bad either, though there are times when the 1GB RAM does fall short, especially when playing graphic intensive games such as Angry Birds Action or Mortal Kombat X. The games work well enough, it is the occasion lag which gets to you. (Well it does to me at least), Games like candy crush work very smoothly though (Yes candy crush fans out there rejoice!). While sticking with hardware for the time being the Infinix Hot 3 comes with 16GB in built storage, with microSD card support (up to 32GB) which is great considering the price of the device. Now lets talk about the cameras, the Infinix Hot 3 comes with a 8MP shooter at the back with phase detection and HDR support and a 2MP wide angle camera in the front.  The great thing about this device is that, the front camera also has flash, which is great news for selfies lovers. The pictures come out quite sharp during the day, even the night shots are decent enough. Beauty Mode, Panorama and Night Mode are the other features you get in the camera software. Voice Capture, Smile Recognition and Gesture Recognition help you in taking group selfies. The Infinix Hot 3 runs on a 3000mAh battery, which I must say gives a pretty good backup. The device easily lasts a whole day with light to moderate...

Turn your skin into a smartwatch touch screen with SkinTrack

Turn your skin into a smartwatch touch screen with SkinTrack

Since the last few years, smart devices (of various shapes and sizes) have been on a rise especially smart watches that have created a lot of waves in recent times. Companies such as Samsung, Apple, Motorola, Huawei and LG to name a few are constantly involved in enhancing the core functionality and features of these little gadgets who’s proper utility still needs to be ascertained. Being a smart watch user myself, the one issue that tends to nag me is the small screen size which sometimes makes navigation slightly difficult as there is not a lot of room for swiping around like on a smart phone. Things are about to change though thanks to a research group at Carnegie Mellon University who have come up with a unique idea that lets users utilize their skins as a secondary touch display. Confused? Amazed? The team is currently working on a new found technology called “SkinTrack” which as the name suggests, allows users to use their skin as a secondary touch screen. The sensors are embedded inside a signal emitting ring on your finger along with four tiny electrodes in the watchband. When your finger makes contact with your watch-wearing arm, the electrodes detect the distance away from the watch. SkinTrack not only detects simple taps and swipes, but also continuous drawing. Another handy feature is the option to use various navigational shortcuts on your arm and hands. You can drag apps off the watch screen and pin them to yourself. It’s also possible to draw letters on your hand to open up apps. Simple gestures for example can include “N” for news, “S” for activating silent mode, “A” for accessing the address book etc.  The technology is still in its early stages but has most certainly paved the pathway for what the future has in store for smart watches. Check out the video to have a better understanding of how this prototype actually works and do share your thoughts with us in the comments below. Cheers !!                                         Source:...
