Google has announced that Google SkyMap which is considered to be one of the popular apps that is available for free in the android market is all set to end the official maintenance and releases. Good news is that Google has decided to release the open source code for SkyMap which is expected to generate more interest among the developer community.

Some of the key features that Google SkyMap include;

  • Combines the astronomical information with that of a smartphone camera
  • With the help of Google SkyMap, users will be able to identify the planets and other elements by simply pointing the smartphone towards the sky
  • The app has a record of more than 10 million downloads since its launch


Google SkyMap was an application that was developed by six of their employees. They developed this app especially during company sponsored spare time. The app will soon become open source and developer community can start thinking about how to use this up to bring out new apps.
