The Verizon Exclusive HTC M8 Windows Phone Edition

HTC have out done themselves this time, having a flagship device that comes with two “Operating System” variants. Confused? Well let me clarify, HTC have just announced another variant of their 2014 flagship Android device the HTC One M8 running Windows Phone. Only Nokia had successfully launched devices, with different operating systems in the past, their Lumia range to be precise. HTC as a company was dropping its sales for quite some time until the launch of the HTC M8, which raised the sales sky high. This is a very smart move, on HTC’s behalf as they are coming up with an already successful device and giving it another dimension. They already have Windows Phones, but not OEM has a flagship running two operating systems form different OEM’s. Maybe this is a start of something beautiful, and other OEM’s might be encouraged to come out with the same. Now talking about the device, the HTC M8 Windows Phone Edition has the exact same specs as its Android counterpart. Quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor @ 2.3GHz 2GB of RAM 5-inch 1920 x 1080 display 32GB of internal storage w/ microSD up to 128GB UltraPixel Duos Camera w/ 5 megapixel front camera Dual-band WiFi ac, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS w/ GLONASS 2,600mAh battery     On the software front, the HTC M8 runs the latest Windows Phone 8.1. Google and Microsoft to bring new “Kill Switch” feature to curb smartphone thefts

Google and Microsoft to bring new “Kill Switch” feature to curb smartphone thefts

With smartphone thefts being recorded at an all time high the timing of this news couldn’t have been more appropriate. Both Google and Microsoft have taken into their stride to try and curb this growing menace with their all new “factory reset protection solution” which would allow users to entirely wipe out their phone’s data with a single press of a button to the extent of which it cannot and WILL not be recovered at the same time rendering the device useless for the other party. The so called “kill switch” option is quite similar to the one already present in an iPhone which has the ability to prevent the device from being factory reset and illegally used by another person as their own. Recent reports have shown a 19% drop off in iPhone thefts from 2013 to 2014 thanks to Apple’s kill switch feature on their devices. The matter has also been taken up to the White House where a new bill (introduced in February) is looking to require all phones sold in the US to include kill switch functionality. Senators believe that this is the only way to truly prevent smartphone thefts, making it common knowledge that would-be smartphone thieves are getting little more than a shiny new brick. Besides the US, smartphone thefts are taking place all over the world and this new preventive measure adopted by both Google and Microsoft for their respective Android and Windows Phone devices respectively, is surely a step in the right direction. The new security feature is expected to make its debut in the upcoming months with the release of Android 5.0 code-named Android L as well as the much anticipated Windows Phone 8.1 update which is expected to roll out sometime later this year. That’s all the news  we have for you guys at the moment, will keep you informed on any further developments once we get to hear anything more from either Google or Microsoft on the matter in the coming...

Microsoft to bring Cortana on Android and iOS devices as well

Microsoft to bring Cortana on Android and iOS devices as well

Voice controlled personal assistants seem to be the so called “in-thing” these days with Apple’s Siri being the lead protagonist followed by Google Voice and now Microsoft’s very own voice controlled assistant for Windows Phone devices, Cortana which is scheduled to arrive later this year bundled along with the highly anticipated Windows Phone 8.1 update. From the look of things little Miss Cortana seems to have all the firepower to finally dethrone Miss Siri once it starts rolling out on a vast scale. When it comes to updates related to sports, latest news, stock exchange or whatever you are interested in, there are plenty of third party apps for that purpose with Google Now being on top of the list these days. Even though the apps along with Google Now are definitely useful, people still prefer using voice controlled personal assistants especially under those conditions where one doesn’t feel comfortable typing. Coming back to Cortana, we did manage to try it out recently on the newly launched Lumia 630 and the results were nothing but impressive. The responses were not only accurate but also at the same time the app worked flawlessly. For you all Android and iOS users who probably want to give it a try on their respective devices, Microsoft have got some good news even though it did startle us a bit considering the fact that both Siri and Google Voice are both exclusively for Android and iOS devices, Cortana on the other hand would be available on all three platforms once Microsoft officially starts rolling out the WP 8.1 update later this fall. Speaking on this regard, Windows Phone Group Program Manager Marcus Ash had this to say; “We want to scale Cortana internationally and across devices. The Android/iOS question is interesting. We’re asking, would Cortana be as effective if she didn’t have access to the details on your phone? We’re still trying to get Cortana adopted on Windows Phone and figure out what it wants to become there. But we’re actively talking about this.”   There are also rumors suggesting that Cortana could also make its way on to desktops as well as in vehicles for navigation purposes but we don’t have a possible time frame on exactly when that would happen. For now let us just stick to using Cortana on our handheld devices and with competition on an all time high, this does seem to be a healthy competitor. Stick around for more...
