UIT goes green by moving to environment-friendly solar energy

UIT goes green by moving to environment-friendly solar energy

Staying committed to conserving energy for a better tomorrow, Pakistan’s premium technology institution, Usman Institute of Technology, moved to solar power to effectively meet the institute’s increasing electricity needs. The institute installed 198 solar panels of 320 Watts each in January 2017 as part of its energy conservation drive that started in August 2016.  Producing a total of 60 kW, the installation now meets about 15% of the institute’s total power needs. “Being Pakistan’s leading technology education provider, we at Usman Institute of Technology deem it our responsibility to educate our student, faculty & staff about energy conservation and do what’s right for the environment,” said Mr. Ahson Nasim, Head of HR & Administration, UIT. “This also includes choosing the right sources of electricity; conventional power plants use a lot of non-renewable energy resources produce electrical power. Solar energy systems do not damage the environment in any way, so are good for the future of the planet.” “One of the major advantages of solar energy is the lack of maintenance that is required in the long run,” added Mr. Ahson. “The systems do need slight maintenance every now and then, but in the long run, the costs are minimal. This means that once the initial investment has been made, there is little that the owner of a solar energy system really needs to do.” As part of its energy conservation drive, UIT also replaced normal ACs with inverter ones, reduced the length of air-conditioning pipes, replaced tube lights with LED lights, besides educating students, faculty and staff on turning off all electrical equipment when not in use. Seeing the encouraging results of the initiative, the institute plans to extend solar system installation to meet a larger portion of its power needs and reduce power costs in the coming...

Introducing the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ with the World’s First Infinity Display and 10nm Processor

Introducing the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ with the World’s First Infinity Display and 10nm Processor

Through out the years, we have seen Samsung come up with innovations that have been nothing but exemplary. Year after year, the South Korean tech giants made sure to bring something new to the table. The year 2016 however proved to be a huge challenge following the (unfortunate) Galaxy Note 7 fiasco due to which the company had to incur huge losses not just financially but also publicly as the company’s image was at stake. That being said, the latest entrant in the long running Galaxy S lineup of Samsung’s flagship devices, the Galaxy S8 is here to change the company’s faltering image. After months of speculations and a host of leaked images, the much awaited device has finally been launched that promises to right whatever the wrongs done by the Galaxy Note 7. Samsung in an event recently held in New York announced two variants of its flagship device the Galaxy S8 and its larger compatriot, the Galaxy S8+ Both the devices have been completely overhauled as far as the design is concerned with Samsung opting to remove its traditional home button  and replacing it with an onscreen haptic touch button. Besides the removal of the home button, the Galaxy S8 is the first Samsung device to come with a complete bezel less curved display. Samsung (as in previous years) has put significant emphasis on the display which is one area where the company truly excels in. Following the success of the brilliant AMOLED and Super AMOLED displays, the Galaxy S8 now comes with the all new Infinity Display. The display sets a new standard for uninterrupted, immersive experiences. It enables an expanded screen size without necessitating a larger phone. So while the view is grander, Galaxy S8 and S8+ feel small in your hand, making them easy to hold and use. Both the devices are available in five exciting colors Midnight Black, Orchid Gray, Coral Blue, Arctic Silver and Maple Gold and would start retailing at all major stores starting from April 21st for an approximate price of $750 for the S8 and $850 for the S8 Plus. Telenor Pakistan partners with PLDDB in move to enhance women participation in agriculture sector

Telenor Pakistan partners with PLDDB in move to enhance women participation in agriculture sector

Pakistan’s foremost telecom and digital services provider, Telenor Pakistan, has joined forces with Punjab Livestock & Dairy Development Board (PLDDB) to enhance women participation in agriculture and farming sector. The collaboration will promote awareness on nutrition, dairy, livestock, agriculture and livelihood related issues through Telenor Pakistan’s communication platform in the province of Punjab. Under the agreement, Telenor Pakistan will launch a dedicated IVR helpline on its mobile agriculture service Khushaal Zamindar for female farmers to sensitize them about making smart choices in order to maximize their revenues from agriculture and farming. The free-of-cost service will be initially launched in five districts of Punjab to gauge the impact and will be subsequently extended to other parts of the province. Currently about 20 percent of the 2.5 million Khushaal Zamindar users are females. Telenor and PLDDB aim to ensure further uptake through the females-centric helpline which will provide female farmers localized, contextualized and customized information about livestock, health and nutritional requirements. Through the simple and user-friendly service, the female farmers will just need to dial 7272-51 to access the relevant information, a number where 51 denotes the percentage of women population of the country. In view of multiple social barriers that resist technology uptake for women, Telenor Pakistan and PLDDB will organize multiple female-only live shows to foster awareness about the usefulness of mobile technology vis-a-vis the agricultural growth. Female farmers will be able to call and ask questions to access real-time information from female agriculture experts and nutritionists at the show. “An overwhelming majority of women, about 72 percent, is in one way or the other associated with the agricultural sector whose contributions go unnoticed and unappreciated,” said Irfan Wahab Khan, CEO, Telenor Pakistan. “We are collaborating with PLDDB to empower them so they can play a more significant and impactful role in the larger economy. Telenor Pakistan is expanding its mobile agriculture service Khushaal Zamindar to incorporate a dedicated female farmers helpline which, in its core, is an acknowledgement of the contributions of these brave women who work tirelessly without eying any appreciation. With the help of PLDDB, we will run a mass awareness campaign to enhance their participation in agriculture and farming which will go on to positively impact the country’s economy.” Commenting on the development, Saira Iftikhar, CEO at PLDDB said, “We are thankful to Telenor Pakistan for extending their technical support and expertise to this project which aims at augmenting women participation in Punjab’s agricultural and farming sector. The Government of Pakistan is keen to ensure the role of women in national development, who constitute about 51 percent of the population. PLDDB and Telenor Pakistan will run an awareness campaign focusing...

Karandaaz Pakistan and Techlogix Partner to Roll-Out Campus on Cloud Solution for Higher Education Institutions

Karandaaz Pakistan and Techlogix Partner to Roll-Out Campus on Cloud Solution for Higher Education Institutions

Karandaaz Pakistan has signed an agreement with Techlogix to invest USD 1.5 million in the company with the vision to scale three new cloud-based verticals – Business Management Software for higher education institutions; Hospital Management Information Systems; and Mobility Information Management System for large scale sales, distribution and field forces. This growth capital investment is funded by United Kingdom Department for International Development (UKAid). We are witnessing a global decline in on-premise solutions and a shift to cloud. Software as a Solution (SaaS) is approaching 30% of total application spend – the total cloud market cap is projected to grow to USD 180 billion by 2018 from less than USD 25 billion in 2008 at a compound annual growth rate of 22%. Techlogix will initially be focusing on scaling AlmusNet, a campus on cloud solution for higher education institutions. The demand for higher education is growing exponentially in the developing world and with it, there is an increasing need for effective automation in processes at universities and colleges. This need is currently met mostly by home-grown solutions that are not cost-effective, lack scalability and do not allow for integration across functions. AlmusNet is a complete solution for colleges and universities to manage their administrative, policy, enrollment, academic, financial and community portals in a cost effective mobile platform. Mr. Ali Sarfraz, CEO at Karandaaz Pakistan said, “We are extremely pleased to have signed our first growth capital investment deal with Techlogix after conducting a rigorous due diligence process, and are confident that this investment will provide good returns to Karandaaz. I would like to thank United Kingdom for International Development (UKAid) for their generous support and look forward to concluding three to four additional deals by 2018 end.” Mr. Asad Azfar, Chief Investment Officer at Karandaaz Pakistan, at the signing ceremony said, “We are excited at Karandaaz Capital to complete our first growth capital investment and begin a strategic partnership with Techlogix Pakistan and Techlogix International Limited. Techlogix is a leading Pakistan-based technology solutions provider with a global client base. Cloud based, proprietary enterprise systems developed by Techlogix for the higher education, large scale distribution (including mobile agent networks and micro finance field force and financial management systems) and healthcare provider industries provide a compelling thematic fit with Karandaaz’s financial inclusion focused investment and technology platforms, and provide potential for attractive final returns given underlying growth dynamics”. “Techlogix is delighted to work with Karandaaz in our exciting evolution from a pure IT services company to a portfolio of product investments,” said Mr. Salman Akhtar, co-founder and CEO of Techlogix, at the occasion. “We added more than 100 resources to our team in 2016 and with...
