Google I/O has showed us a number of surprises this year, one of which was the launch of the first ever Nexus Tablet. The tablet by Asus called Nexus 7, has an IPS (In-plane switching) screen with a resolution of 1280×800 pixels. The tablet as the name suggests is a 7 inch power house, running on a Nvidia Tegra 3 Quad core processor. The 8GB version of the tablet is for $199 and the 16GB costs $249.

First Look

This is the first ever tablet to come with Android’s latest OS “Jelly Bean”. The Android 4.1 boasts of improving the precision when typing on the soft keyboard. According to a number of reviews so far, the improvement has been clearly seen. Now lets go to the look of the device, the tablet measures 10.45mm thick, weighing around 0.7 pounds. The back embossed with both “Nexus” and “Asus” is made in such a way to give a firm grip on the device but feels very comfortable. The tablets main competitor is Amazon’s Kindle Fire, but is panning out to have surpassed it.

The home screen is only locked on portrait mode, with a toolbar at the bottom consisting of Google’s very own Apps like the play Store, Google Music, Books etc. The 4.1 upgrade also updates the Play Store, so now you can purchase TV series and movie’s from the store, this update does make a lot of  sense considering Google are targeting the Kindle Fire. The device not only comes with Tegra 3 Quad-core processor, but also a 12 core GPU, so that makes 4 + 12 = 16 cores!! Wow that is impressive, for a little guy it sure packs a hell of a punch.

The tablet only comes with a front facing camera for video conferencing, so that means no back camera which is a let off, but for the price it does makes sense not to give one.  Another draw back is that it has no slot for memory expansion, so you will have to do with 8 GB or 16 GB storage only.

So this is supposed to be the “Kindle Fire Killer”, with its impressive specs and Android 4.1 OS  it is sure to do just that.
